<![CDATA[ Latest from GamesRadar+ UK in Dc-movies ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com 2025-02-11T11:50:52Z en <![CDATA[ DC fans are saying the latest look at David Corenswet's Superman flying is what the controversial trailer should have looked like ]]> A new look at David Corenswet’s Superman taking flight has hit the internet, and DC fans are saying that it looks better than how we saw the hero fly in recent footage.

The new look comes from a merchandise box for a Krypto action figure. A picture of the hero is shown at the corner of the box, where Corenswet’s Superman is seen flying upwards with his fist pointed out. Check out the image below.

New Promotional Image of David Corenswet's Superman from a Krypto Action Figure Cover from r/DC_Cinematic

It hasn't taken long for DC fans to take to Reddit to discuss Corenswet finally striking the iconic Superman pose. "Love the Reeve-style of flying!," said one fan, while others pointed out how the shot feels reminiscent of Brandon Routh’s hero in the 2006 movie Superman Returns

However, many Reddit users are questioning why Warner Bros. didn't use this shot in the first trailer. "This is literally what the other flying shot should have looked more like," said one fan, while another added, "Okay, now that’s more like it. I can’t help but feel the recent spot wouldn’t have gotten so much in the way of jokes had this been the posing, angle, and all that."

Of course, the fans are talking about the awkward restrained pose Superman was shown in recent Superman footage. As soon as the clip dropped, fans couldn't get over how strange Corenswet looked taking flight as the hero, with his arms held back as if he had been shot out of a cannon. This made a few fans a bit concerned, but with this new look, it seems like we have nothing to worry about.

Kickstarting the live-action side of James Gunn’s brand new DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Superman stars Corenswet as The Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent AKA Superman, as the hero balances his Kryptonian and human heritage. The movie also stars Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Superman releases on July 11, 2025. While you wait, check out what other upcoming DC movies you have to look forward to.

<![CDATA[ Andy Serkis knows the story of The Batman 2 and he's "hungry" for the movie ]]> Andy Serkis is reprising his role as Bruce Wayne's loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth for The Batman 2, and he says he's as "hungry" for it as fans are. The movie was recently delayed to 2027, with filming set to start at some point this year.

"I am as hungry for it as you all are," Serkis said during a public appearance at Orlando's fan convention MegaCon last Sunday (via Youtube channel Love Our Life).

"He [Matt Reeves] told me the story of The Batman 2, and I was so excited for it", the actor told the fans, but he didn't reveal any more details about the movie, or when we can expect filming to start.

It's still a positive update, however, following the sequel's recent delays, which will lead to a five-year gap between The Batman and the release of The Batman 2.

In early January, director Matt Reeves addressed the situation, saying things are going to start moving forward soon. "I can tell you we're going to be shooting this year, and that we're excited about it. We’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story comes, but it's something that I hope people will be surprised by," he said.

Reeves also said the villain of the film, who hasn't been announced yet, will surprise fans. "The story is a continuation in a certain way and completely different in another. It's gonna show a different side to Rob[ert Pattinson]. I think it's going to be really cool," he added.

It's going to be a long wait for The Batman 2, but in the meantime we can also enjoy this DC universe through HBO's award-winning spin-off series The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell as the titular DC villain.

The Batman: Part 2 hits theaters on October 1, 2027. While you wait, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and TV shows for everything else that's on the way.

<![CDATA[ The Dark Knight Rises star says she "screwed up" the death scene that still angers fans over a decade later ]]> Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard says she "screwed up" in one scene from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, which has been a subject of heated debate among fans for over a decade now.

Reuniting with Nolan after Inception, Cotillard played Wayne Enterprises' CEO Miranda Tate in the sequel to The Dark Knight, released in 2012. Spoiler alert, her character starts as an ally to Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne, but she is later revealed to be Talia al Ghul, an accomplice of Tom Hardy's masked villain Bane.

After trying to kill Batman and destroy Gotham, Cotillard's character dies in a crash. Her death scene sees the French actress delivering a monologue in an awkward position from the truck that’s just crashed. "My father's work is done," she whispers in her last breath. However, the emotional impact of the scene, fans point out, is ruined by the oddness of Cotillard's performance.

The actress agrees. "I didn't nail that scene," she said when a fan asked her about the scene in French TV show Les rencontres du Papotin (via Reddit).

"I couldn't find the right position, I couldn't find the right way... I was stressed. Sometimes it happens, we screw something up. And this, I screwed up", she added.

As a recurrent debate among The Dark Knight fans since the movie was released, this is not the first time Cotillard talks about it. Back in 2016, she addressed the scene in an interview with Allociné.

"Sometimes there are failures, and when you see this on screen, you're thinking: 'Why? Why did they keep that take?' But either you blame everyone or nobody. But I thought people overreacted, because it was tough to be identified just with this scene. When I'm doing the best I can to find the authenticity in every character that I'm playing, it's tough to be known just for this scene".

<![CDATA[ Superman skipped a Super Bowl TV spot in favor of a Green Lantern joke, and DC fans are divided ]]> Superman skipped a Super Bowl trailer in favor of a new look at both Green Lantern and Krypto – and DC fans aren't sure what to make of it.

The clip shows Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner fixing his infamous hair, captioned "the only bowl I need."

"Yes! I love that you're leaning into his haircut," says one fan, while another says: "Guy Gardner fixing his bowl cut stylishly is exploding on the timeline, I prayed for times like this as a DC fan"

But not everyone is so positive. "Bro did they rlly only drop one Krypto promo vid and a goddamn Guy Gardner TikTok for this Puppy Bowl? Where is the new clip" says another person.

"I really hate this character design. I don't care that it's comic accurate," says someone else.

"Not having a Super Bowl TV Spot for a Superman movie is kind of insane. Don't agree with it tbh," is another person's verdict.

We'll just have to be a little more patient for our next look at the tentpole DC movie, which is arriving as part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

David Correnswet stars as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Along with Fillion, the rest of the cast includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Superman arrives on July 11. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and shows for everything else the DCU has in store.

<![CDATA[ Superman star Rachel Brosnahan reveals how James Gunn's DC movie is "so true to the comics" ]]> What would Superman really be without Lois Lane? It's a question we thankfully won't need to consider, given that James Gunn has found his perfect pair to play them in his upcoming film. As David Corenswet dons the cape and signature hair curl, Rachel Brosnahan will be left to look up in the sky as the Daily Planet's top reporter and she's excited for what's in store.

Speaking to Deadline about the upcoming film, Brosnahan assures that there's no better time than now for the Man of Tomorrow to make his return today. “We’re living in a moment of so much turmoil, both here, abroad,” explained the former star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. “There’s a lot of challenges for everybody in all different pockets of the world right now. And for a lot of the complaints that people have sometimes about superhero movies, at their core, they’re about the goodness of people and how good we can be to each other, how the pursuit of truth and justice really are the American way, and that courage and hope can carry us through."

So far, what's been left on show has given fans very little to complain about (excluding that viral clip of Supes flying that even Gunn himself had to address). Corenswet's Kal-El looks to be tapping into the classic iteration of the hero that the former Guardians of the Galaxy director revealed will bring a balance of the Silver Age comic book style for modern-age storytelling. Meanwhile, Brosnahan assured, "It’s a hopeful superhero movie, which I feel like is so true to the comics. So, I’m excited for audiences to see it and hopefully have some fun and enjoy the ride with us.”

But of course, just like Corenswet will be following in the superpowered footsteps of stars like Henry Cavill, Brandon Routh, and the legendary Christopher Reeve from director Richard Donner's iconic iteration, his co-star will have the same issue following the legendary Lois' that came before her. “I mean, I grew up loving the Donner Superman movies, the Chris Reeve Superman movies, Margot Kidder. I mean, she’s just a dream. So, I was definitely intimidated to step into this role but excited to pick up the mantle."

We'll see how Brosnahan handles staying in her Lane when Superman flies into theatres on July 11. For everything else DC-related, be sure to check out our guide of movies and shows from that universe here.

<![CDATA[ Supergirl release date, cast, plot, and trailer speculation: Everything we know about the DCU movie ]]> Supergirl will soon be flying onto our screens in her debut DCU movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Played by House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock, the movie will focus on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. Now, there's a lot we don't know yet about the upcoming movie, but it's expected it will be based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, which follows Kara as she gets drawn into a quest for revenge across the galaxy.

We also have concrete details from DC Studios head James Gunn, who has confirmed the release date, many of the cast members, and even a first look image from the upcoming movie. Now that filming has officially kicked off too, we expect more announcements will be on the horizon for Supergirl and luckily for you, we've rounded everything known so far up in one place.

Supergirl release date

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. This comes almost a year after the release of Superman this July. Based on the planned release dates for James Gunn's DCU, this means that Supergirl will be the fourth project in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Cameras are officially rolling on Supergirl now too. James Gunn shared a first-look image of star Milly Alcock on set in the UK in January 2025.

Supergirl plot speculation

Milly Alcock at the Golden Globe Awards

There is no official plot synopsis yet for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but we do know it will be based on Tom King's comic of the same name. This begins with Kara Zor-El traveling across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with her beloved companion Krypto the Superdog in tow. On her journey, she meets a young woman named Ruthye who is on her own path of discovery. Ruthye's father has been killed and she wants revenge – and Kara is keen to help her in any way she can.

It's also been confirmed that Supergirl will make her debut in the upcoming Superman movie, which should give us some indication of where her individual story will go. Hopefully, that movie will explain a bit more about the dynamic between Kara and her cousin Clark Kent, especially as in the comic book it's slightly fraught by the time that begins.

Supergirl cast

Matthias Schoenaerts in The Old Guard

House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, Kara Zor-El. The actor was cast by James Gunn who said they loved her "edge, grace, and authenticity". Meanwhile, Matthias Schoenaerts will play the movie's big villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley will star as the young girl Supergirl befriends, Ruthye Marye Knoll.

The rest of the Supergirl cast hasn't been completely locked down yet, and we're expecting there may be some surprise cameos along the line too. Check out the list below of everyone who has been confirmed for the cast list.

 • Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl
 • Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills
 • Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll
 • David Krumholtz as Zor-El
 • Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother
 • Jason Momoa as Lobo

Jason Momoa is rumored to make his new DCU debut as the comic book character Lobo in Supergirl, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actor previously starred as Aquaman in the DC universe before it was rebooted under James Gunn. It's very possible that David Corenswet's Superman may also make an appearance in the upcoming movie, but nothing has been confirmed on that front just yet. Cruella and I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie is directing the movie.

Is there a Supergirl trailer?

James Gunn speaking at New York Comic-Con

No, there is no Supergirl trailer yet. Cameras only started rolling on the project in January 2025, meaning there will likely be a bit of a wait before new footage is released. The first Superman trailer was released in December 2024 ahead of its July 2025 release date. Based on the same logic, we expect the Supergirl trailer could be released in November or December 2025.

<![CDATA[ Lady Gaga addresses Joker 2 backlash: "People just sometimes don't like some things" ]]> Lady Gaga has broken her silence on the audience backlash to Joker: Folie à Deux.

Gaga, who played Harley 'Lee' Quinn in the sequel to 2019's Joker, said in an interview with Elle, "People just sometimes don't like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended."

While Gaga's work in the sequel – which includes several musical numbers alongside Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck – didn't draw the ire of critics, the film as a whole received a lukewarm response after a middling opening weekend at the box office.

Ending with a $207 million box office, considerably down on the $1.079 billion of the first movie, sections of the audience felt Folie à Deux's mean-spirited tone and Arthur's ultimate rejection of the Joker persona went against the core spirit of the first movie, as well as tarnishing its legacy.

Despite the initial outpouring of disappointment, notable names from Hideo Kojima to Quentin Tarantino went to bat for the DC 'Elseworlds' sequel and how it subverted expectations.

"He's saying fuck you to all of them. He's saying fuck you to the movie audience," Tarantino said during about Joker: Folie à Deux during an appearance on the Bret Easton Ellis podcast. "He's saying fuck you to Hollywood. He's saying fuck you to anybody who owns any stock at DC and Warner Brothers… And Todd Phillips is the Joker.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn responds after new Superman flying clip goes viral for the wrong reasons: "There is absolutely zero CG" ]]> James Gunn has weighed in after a new clip of Superman sparked quite a debate online. The director of the upcoming DC movie clarified the use of CG on a flying scene of David Corenswet's turn as the Man of Steel.

The short clip comes at the end of the latest trailer, and left some fans calling it "goofy" and comparing it to other face-focussed flying scenes on film.

Others wondered if CGI might have been used on Corenswet's face in the sequence, including one fan who wrote to Gunn.

Posting on Threads, they wrote: "Looks dope!! Great camera angle of Superman flying!! Except there's something with his face that looks a little off. I know there's plenty of time to refine the CG."

Replying, Gunn clarified that none was used, pointing out why it looks the way it does. "There is absolutely zero CG in his face," he wrote.

"People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David."

The short teaser also featured some shots taken from the main trailer, as well as a new close up look at Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor.

As well as starring Corenswet as Clark Kent and Hoult as Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane, Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi plays Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl. It's also been confirmed that Milly Alcock's Supergirl will be introduced in the movie too.

Superman will kick off James Gunn's live-action DCU on July 11, 2025, following on from the release of Creature Commandos last December.

In our Creature Commandos review, we noted that "James Gunn’s heartwarming, R-rated tale about super-monsters proves that the DCU is in good hands."

The Gunn era of DC movies is set to be a massively different vision from that of the Zack Snyder era of grittier excess, and we won't have long to wait now to see how successful this brighter, pulpy take resonates with audiences.

<![CDATA[ Will Superman save the day? James Gunn's upcoming DC movie will make or break the new DCU ]]> Will Superman save the day, once again? That's the big question for DC Studios heading into 2025, as the entire hopes of a 10-year-plan rest on James Gunn’s Superman. If Superman hits? We're up, up, and away for the DCU. If it fails? Then those lofty ambitions will fall faster than the Man of Steel being brought down by Kryptonite.

Way back in January of 2023, Gunn – who had been hired as co-CEO of the new DC Studios in 2022 – unveiled an ambitious plan to reorganize the DC Comics-based properties into one, unified vision. Along with co-CEO Peter Safran and a team of writers, Gunn had developed a two-chapter story that would take eight to 10 years, with the first chapter titled 'Gods and Monsters'.

As initially announced, this would likely include everything from a new Superman movie written and directed by Gunn, to films for antihero team The Authority, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing. Then there are the TV projects like the animated Creature Commandos, live-action Green Lantern series Lanterns, and a Game of Thrones-esque series focusing on Wonder Woman’s home, Themyscira.

Even more ambitious than the interconnected plan, Gunn also talked up how actors would be cast in roles which would work across everything from live-action to animation and video games. They would also "soft reboot" the previous DCEU to include some of the best elements, like Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller and Gunn’s Peacemaker TV show.

A purposefully slow and careful start

Creature Commandos

Two years later, Gunn's plan for DC Studios is just getting started. Laudably, the writer/director/CEO has loudly and repeatedly declared that he won't greenlight any projects until everyone is happy with the script, meaning rather than figuring out a story on the fly (a repeated issue with not just other interconnected superhero universes, but nearly all big-budget Hollywood movies), films and TV shows that head into production can have a solid base to work from. But that also means many of the projects in that first announcement, including the Themyscira show Paradise Lost, comedy Booster Gold, Swamp Thing, and even the Batman project Brave and the Bold, are still TBD.

Instead, the only DCU proper project we have so far is Max's raunchy, violent animated show Creature Commandos, which wrapped up its first season on the streaming service earlier this month, and has been picked up for a second season – premiere date on that TBA. And in 2025, as the film adaptation of lauded comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and the Lanterns TV series head into production, only two additional DCU projects are hitting your screens, large and small: Superman and Peacemaker Season 2.

On the latter, Gunn has noted that his Peacemaker series is part of the aforementioned soft reboot except for one scene (that would be the DCEU’s Justice League showing up in the final episode). And while the first season was critically acclaimed, it’s unlikely the second season will be a massive breakout hit, so much as more of the same. One possible exception there? If, like The Penguin before it, HBO decides to air Peacemaker on the channel, it could help raise the profile of the show beyond the hardcore DC fans (and fans of John Cena).

Creature Commandos too played to the DC and James Gunn faithful: it's a hit inasmuch as Gunn has said viewership increased week over week on Max. But its cultural footprint otherwise has been relatively small and as of time of writing, it has yet to break into Nielsen’s Top 10 for streaming originals, one of the few reliable third-party metrics for streaming success.

So, it looks like this is a job for Superman.

Look up

Superman

Hitting theaters in July, Gunn has a chance to make his statement about the DCU, and even superheroes as a whole, with Superman. While Creature Commandos was a project Gunn worked on prior to snagging the CEO job, this is one he’s using to kick off not just the formal introduction of the Man of Steel on screen in the form of actor David Corenswet, but an entire array of heroes and villains including Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and many, many more. Heck, even Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is reported to be making an appearance in the movie meaning as usual, Superman has the weight of the whole world on his shoulders.

That’s a lot of pressure to put on any movie, but it needs to hit. Not just for Gunn's DC Studios and the future of the DCU, but for the parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. If you’re going to invest in a decade of movies and TV shows, the kick-off needs to be strong. And working against this new movie? No Superman movie has ever broken $300 million domestically at the box office, with the exception of Batman v Superman, aka the one with Batman (DC’s cash cow) at the front of the title. Additionally, none have ever broken a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, the modern threshold for box office success… Including BvS.

Also working against Superman? The DC movies have been in freefall at the box office for a long time. From 2022’s Black Adam on, DC-based movies have struggled to find an audience in theaters. While fans might chalk that up to the vestigial limb nature of the DCEU after the announcement that Gunn was taking over, there’s an open question whether audiences care about DC superheroes – other than Batman – at all. Heck, it’s also an open question whether, after decades of cultural domination, audiences have become exhausted by the concept of superheroes entirely.

All eyes on the box office

Superman

Let’s be frank here: even if Superman is a critical success, a la pretty much every Gunn project including Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, all of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and The Suicide Squad, money is what keeps the machine going. If Superman is a box office success, that gives Gunn the ammunition to continue his admirable creative ambitions ranging from a Mike Flanagan-written Clayface movie to the fascinating-sounding puppet/CGI hybrid Dynamic Duo.

On the other hand, if Superman does 'okay', i.e. in the range of previous Superman movies, there's no way that doesn't impact what seems to be an otherwise hands-off approach from Warner Bros. Discovery thus far. The global box office is key here, but anything south of that billion-dollar mark likely leads to at least a few more studio notes heading to James Gunn's inbox, and potentially somewhat of a reassessment of the less likely box office prospects (see Clayface and Dynamic Duo above).

But if Superman does badly, i.e. in the range of nearly every DC project since 2022, then that puts the entire 10-year plan into doubt. By that point, Supergirl and Lanterns will likely move ahead since they will have already wrapped (or are close to wrapping). But the extensive, measured approach Gunn has been taking to DC Studios? That almost assuredly gets called into question, and perhaps jettisoned entirely. And if that's the case, and we do witness the death of Superman, Warner Bros. is going to do what they always do: light the Bat-signal, and hope that Batman can save the day.

<![CDATA[ Superman fans are divided over a "goofy" new flying scene that's getting attention for all the wrong reasons ]]> A new Superman teaser has landed and, with it, endless discourse about a one-second flying scene that's being described as everything from "goofy" to a "downgrade" on previous efforts showcasing the Man of Steel soaring through the air.

The closing seconds of the new teaser, which you can see below, sees David Corenswet's Superman barrel around an icy landscape, followed by a close-up of his face mid-flight.

While the 30-second clip preaches hope and optimism, many were immediately dissatisfied with how that scene looked in motion – something that continues a trend of awkwardly-framed flying scenes in everything from Sonic the Hedgehog, Black Adam, and even Adam Warlock in director James Gunn's previous effort, Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

"Seriously, what is up with these weird face-on lens distortion flying shots focusing only on the character’s face lately? Black Adam, Adam Warlock, and now Superman. There are so many cooler ways to visualize flying; just look at anything in Man of Steel," one wrote on Twitter, getting to the heart of the matter that's engulfed Superman discussion online. "These just look goofy."

"The downgrade is insane," another added, while comparing the split-second scene in 2025's Superman against Henry Cavill's iteration of the DC hero travelling at mach-speed in 2013's Man of Steel.

While, on balance, there appears to be more naysayers than those defending the scene, others aren't as bothered by the moment. "Can someone explain to me what's wrong with this TWO SECOND clip?" one remarked.

Finally, a viewer said, "Really do think people are overexaggerating how weird the flying shot in the new #Superman  is. Like....this looks genuinely fine. Pretty much the kind of flying motion I was hoping for."

Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and a legion of other actors as various DC heroes and villains, is set to fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025. It's also the first live-action project in DCU Chapter One, the first tentative steps in the new cinematic universe overseen by DC Studios' James Gunn and Peter Safran.

<![CDATA[ The first look at DC's Supergirl movie is hiding a comic-accurate scene from one of Kara's best adventures ]]> Yesterday, James Gunn revealed the first look behind the scenes of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. But what you may not have spotted was a nod to a comic-accurate scene pulled straight from the panels and pages of one of Kara's best adventures.

In the background of the image, which you can see below, a sci-fi bar area can be glimpsed. That's likely due to Woman of Tomorrow adapting a moment from the second issue of Tom King's 2022 comic of the same name.

In it, Kara has whisked her new companion Ruthye away to the stars. On a short rest-stop before continuing Kara's revenge mission, she encounters a hostile alien who, having taken umbrage with Superman dumping his brothers in the Phantom Zone, decides to take his anger out on Supergirl.

Unfortunately for him, Supergirl isn't the "soft underbelly" he was expecting – and hits him with just as much force as his Kryptonian cousin would. In one fell swoop, Supergirl proves she's so much more than a member of Superman's family – and a physical threat in her own right.

"Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El," Gunn wrote on Twitter, accompanied by an image of Alcock sat, back to the camera, on a chair adorned with a slightly darker Superman logo than the one seen on David Corsenswet's suit.

Gunn continued, "Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique Supergirl envisioned by [writers] Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to adapt Tom King's Woman of Tomorrow comic miniseries, which saw Kara on the trail of Krem, the man who brutally murdered her father.

The DCU adaptation, though, is set to be a little closer to King's original plans for his story, including the appearance of Lobo (played by former Aquaman actor Jason Momoa). The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, and David Krumholtz.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026. Milly Alcock's Supergirl will also appear in this year's Superman. For more, check out our guides to DCU Chapter One and upcoming superhero movies.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn shares first look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow with House of the Dragon star, confirms the new DC movie has started filming ]]> The first look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has arrived - and filming has finally begun.

"Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El," James Gunn wrote alongside a photo of Alcock from behind, seated in a director's chair with the Supergirl logo on it. "Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira." Check out the photo below.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow marks the second film in Gunn and Safran's new DCU, the first being Superman. Craig Gillespie directs from a screenplay penned by Nogueira. The cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother. Schoenaerts is set to play the big bad, Krem of the Yellow Hills. Jason Momoa is also set to make an appearance as Lobo.

Per the official synopsis, "While celebrating her 21st birthday, Kara Zor-El travels across the galaxy with Krypto, during which she meets the young Ruthye and goes on a 'murderous quest for revenge'" (H/T Variety). Gunn previously described it as "above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale."

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 26, 2026. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond, or, check out guide to all of the upcoming DC movies and shows you need to know about.

<![CDATA[ Batgirl crew member says the scrapped DC movie was "literally completely finished" with "VFX and everything" ]]> Almost three years after the Batgirl movie was scrapped, a crew member has confirmed that the DC film was pretty much finished, complete with VFX editing.

"It’s insane that they scrapped it. It was literally completely finished VFX and everything," said art department assistant Annie Mitchell via a TikTok comment. "I definitely believe it still exists tho. Really hoping someone leaks it in 10 years."

The comments are in reply to a video, part of the viral TikTok trend where users answer ‘What’s your favorite piece of lost media’, to which @hellenicrequiem replied Batgirl. "It's actually so soul-crushing to see the amount of love and effort put into a film only for it to be turned into a tax write-off and completely deleted from existence," said the user of Batgirl.

According to Mitchell’s comments and her IMDb page, Mitchell worked in the art department on Batgirl while it was filmed in Scotland. "I was in the set decoration department for the whole movie," said Mitchell. "For things like the huge street transformation we did to make a random Glasgow street into Gotham."

Starring Leslie Grace as Batgirl, based on the DC comic book character Barbara Gordon, the movie was set to follow the young vigilante and the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon as she balances a double life in Gotham City. Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, Batgirl was intended to be part of the DCEU, also starring J. K. Simmons, Jacob Scipio, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton, and Ivory Aquino.

Development on the feature film first began in 2017 but faced a rewrite in 2018 and then changed directors in 2021. But, in August 2022 the film was scrapped due to cost-cutting, despite it already entering post-production.

However, considering the hundreds of thousands of likes on that one TikTok video, it is clear that fans still want to see the movie. Who knows, maybe Warner Bros. will release the movie in 10 years, just like Mitchell says.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says he's busy writing his next DC Studios project, and fans think they've worked out what it is ]]> James Gunn has revealed his incredible workload in response to a fan on Threads. The DC Studios head was asked about how he was balancing work on Superman and Peacemaker season 2 with pre-production on a whole host of other DC projects.

"The bulk of my time is dealing with post-production on Superman and Peacemaker," Gunn replied. "But I’m also spending a fair amount of time pre-writing my next DC Studios project and watching dailies and offering ideas on the other projects. It’s much less overwhelming than when I was directing."

Now, it's not been announced which DC Studios project Gunn is working on next yet. However, fans have been taking to Reddit to speculate. "I feel like he wants to do Booster Gold himself," one wrote, referring to one of the announced TV shows on the DCU: Chapter One line-up. The latest update on that one came in December 2024 when Gunn shared that the scripts aren't quite where he wants them.

Others wondered if could be working on the Batman project, Batman: Brave and the Bold. "Please be Batman, please be Batman, please be Batman," another Redditor wrote while a third added: "I hope he does Batman tbh. He seems passionate about Batman."

However, by far the biggest guess amongst DC fans is The Authority, which follows a group of anti-heroes who are known as the anti-Justice League. It does admittedly sound right up the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director's street, doesn't it?

"The authority would be my bet," wrote one fan on Reddit, while another agreed: "Yep especially since he called it his passion project." A third added: "I’m betting on Superman II or The Authority."

We'll just have to wait and see what it turns out to be, but in the meantime we have Gunn's take on Superman coming out this summer. Check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and shows for what else is on the horizon.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn has made the DCU canon complicated all over again by calling The Suicide Squad an "imperfect memory," and Creature Commandos the only "pure canon" so far ]]> The DCU has officially kicked off with Creature Commandos, which means everything that came before is now non-canon – sort of.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn took to Bluesky to clarify some questions surrounding the canon status of his other DC projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. By the sounds of it, they're not canon, but also kind of are.

"Short answer: Only Creature Commandos forward is pure canon. For instance, Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad," Gunn wrote.

"Long answer: Only CC forward is pure canon; Peacemaker is almost entirely consistent with that canon other than the Justice League; The Suicide Squad has a lot of consistencies but I think of it as an imperfect memory," he concluded.

While this isn't super clear, we're sure that everything will make more sense as time goes on and more DC Studios projects are released.

This isn't the first time Gunn has clarified some canon questions, either. He recently took to the internet to explain why certain TV shows didn't have the DC Studios fanfare attached.

Next up for DC is Superman, previously titled Superman: Legacy. That movie stars David Corenswet as Supes himself, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It arrives on July 11.

<![CDATA[ As Milly Alcock's Supergirl is confirmed to appear in Superman, DC fans are concerned the movie may have too many characters ]]> Now that Milly Alcock's Supergirl is confirmed to appear in James Gunn's upcoming Superman movie (via The Hollywood Reporter), some fans are concerned that the first big-screen outing in the DCU may feature a few too many characters.

Alongside David Corenswet's Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane, the movie, which will be part of Gunn's DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, features a 'who's who' of DC characters. Nicholas Hoult will star as Lex Luthor, while Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi is Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced is Hawkgirl.

"What a surprise this movie is going to have yet another superhero that isn't Superman in it," wrote one Reddit user. "Too many characters being introduced," replied another. "Reminds me of a complaint they had with the Snyderverse."

"Starting to feel more like a Justice League movie than a Superman movie," said someone else.

Not everyone feels negatively, though. "[I don't care]," said another fan. "James Gunn always has a big cast and does it well. I trust him to make a good movie."

"I don't see it, other heroes are involved but that doesn't automatically make it a team movie, the DCU is a world with meta humans already well established it would make sense for some to be in the film," agreed someone else. "Not only that but interacting with other heroes and inspiring them is a part of Supermans life so even with other heroes it most certainly can stay focused on him."

Alcock's DCU casting was announced back in January 2024 and she's set to lead her own movie with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026. Filming is currently underway, with Cruella and I, Tonya helmer Craig Gillespie in the director's chair. In the same report, The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that Oppenheimer's David Krumholtz and 1899's Emily Beecham have now been cast as Kara Zor-El's parents

Superman flies onto the big screen this July 11. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other new superhero movies on the way in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Logan director says his Swamp Thing movie will be "a simple, clean Gothic horror" that's not connected to the wider DCU ]]> Sorry, Justice League Dark fans, the DCU's upcoming Swamp Thing movie won't be connected to the wider franchise. Well, if director James Mangold can help it, anyway...

In a new interview with MovieWeb, the filmmaker, whose previous works include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Logan, teased what to expect from his adaptation, describing it as a "simple, clean Gothic horror about this man/monster."

"With other kinds of IP, it gets to a religious level. While I'm sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise," Mangold continued. "[I'm] just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable and you can't please anybody."

Created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets #92 back in July 1971. It's not been made clear which version of the character Mangold will be bringing to life but in the comics, the antihero has had four different alter-egos: Alexander Olsen, Alec Holland, Tefé Holland, and Levi Kamei. It's most likely that the film will center on Alec, though, given that he's the most notable – and was also the protagonist of DC's TV show that ran for one season in 2019.

In the source material, Alec is introduced as a Louisiana-based scientist who invents a formula that promises to solve the world's food shortage problems with his wife Linda. But after his rivals plant a bomb in his laboratory and he gets caught in the explosion, Alec runs into a nearby swamp. The formula, which is drenched all over his body, then affects the plant in the swamp, imbuing it with Alec's consciousness and transforming him into an anthropomorphic mound of mossy matter.

His best-known enemies include Floronic Man, General Sunderland, the Un-Men, and Anton Arcane, while he goes on to become the partner of John Constantine – a fact that had some fans hoping Swamp Thing's movie would usher the occultist into the DCU.

"I've learned a lot, whether it's making an action film, or whether it's making a Western and bringing those energies to a kind of superhero film or Marvel film," Mangold added. "You not only learn things making one genre, but then you learn how to carry over lessons from that genre into another one that you might not expect."

<![CDATA[ The Flash director explains why the DC movie flopped, suggesting that "a lot of people just don't care" about the character – despite one obvious counter-point ]]> The Flash director Andy Muschietti has offered up a fresh reason as to why the DC movie stumbled in cinemas.

Speaking on Radio Tu’s La Baulera del Coso (H/T Variety), Muschietti pointed out that the movie wasn't universally popular with what Hollywood terms the 'four quadrants': male over 25s, male under 25s, female over 25s, and female under 25s.

"The Flash failed, among all the other reasons, because it wasn’t a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that," Muschietti said, adding, "When you spend $200 million making a movie, [Warner Bros.] wants to bring even your grandmother to the theaters."

Curiously, Muschietti revealed that The Flash simply isn't popular enough compared to fellow DC heroes Batman and Superman – according to unnamed figures he spoke to behind the scenes.

"I’ve found in private conversations that a lot of people just don’t care about the Flash as a character," Muschietti revealed, which seemingly mirrors audience apathy for the project.

Of course, CW's The Flash, starring Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, proved one of the cornerstones of the 'Arrowverse' and ran for nine seasons.

The Flash's big-screen offering, though, proved to be one of DC's biggest misfires of recent years. It barely recouped its $200 million budget, generating $271 million at the box office. That's despite it being one of the final parting shots of the DCEU and starring a returning Michael Keaton as Batman alongside Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, and Michael Shannon.

DC, meanwhile, is starting over with DC Studios' James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm. July's Superman kicks off the live-action slate of DCU Chapter One, which is titled Gods and Monsters and features everything from a Green Lantern TV show to a Clayface movie written by Mike Flanagan.

<![CDATA[ The Batman 2 director teases "completely different" sequel, as he promises the movie's main villain will surprise DC fans ]]> Matt Reeves has opened up about The Batman 2, promising a "completely different" take on the DC character and a main villain that even the most clued-up comic book fans won't predict.

Speaking with MTV's Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes 2025, the director was asked whether he'd seen the speculation online as to who the follow-up's foe would be, with Horowitz mentioning that Freeze's name has come up a lot. "I mean, you know, you just kind of look at them casually and go, like, 'Oh, is that what they think now? Interesting!'" Reeves explained. "You've just got to put your head down and do what you do, and try and do it as best you can."

Reeves kept quiet on who the baddie will actually be, naturally, though he said it'll be surprising. "I think so, I hope so," he smiled, before going on to share an exciting tease of the film itself. "I'm super excited about what we're doing. I really can't wait to share it with everybody. The story is a continuation in a certain way and completely different in another. It's gonna show a different side to Rob[ert Pattinson]. I think it's going to be really cool."

While the script isn't quite finished yet, Reeves went on to say that they'll still hoping to start filming this year, ahead of the sequel's release date on October 1, 2027.

Released back in 2022, The Batman sees Pattinson's Dark Knight, who's only in his second year of vigilantism, take on Paul Dano's the Riddler, a mysterious serial killer targeting Gotham's elite. Zoë Kravitz (as Selina Kyle/Catwoman), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), and Colin Farrell (Oswald Cobb/The Penguin) also star.

<![CDATA[ Matt Reeves says that Robert Pattinson's Batman will join the DCU only if it "makes sense" ]]> Robert Pattinson is the star of Matt Reeves' ongoing Batman trilogy, but could the actor also play a big part in the wider DC Universe? With James Gunn and Peter Safran leading a new era for the franchise, anything is possible, but only if it "makes sense".

That's what Reeves answered when asked about the possibility of Pattinson joining the DCU, making clear that the focus right now for both of them is on the sequel to 2022's The Batman.

"It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense," the director told Josh Horowitz at the Golden Globes red carpet. "There was a story I wanted to tell, we're calling it the epic crime saga and all of that, which is the thrust of what we wanted to do, and it's been important to me to be able to play that out," he added.

"James and Peter have been really great about that, and they're letting us do that. What the future brings, I can't really tell you, I have no idea right now, except that my head is down now about getting The Batman 2 shooting and to make it something really special, which of course it's the most important thing."

Horowitz asked one last time about the possibility of Pattinson being chose as the DCU's Batman, but Reeves didn't give anything away. "I don't know, we'll have to see where that goes", he said.

The filmmaker also had to answer a few questions about the upcoming sequel, which was recently delayed to 2027. "We're still finishing the script, and there's been so many things going on. Next year is very much about getting into production, and getting the movie going, and we're very excited about it," Reeves told THR at the Globes.

The Batman: Part 2 hits theaters on October 1, 2027. While you wait, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and TV shows for everything else that's on the way.

<![CDATA[ Matt Reeves explains why The Batman 2 is delayed to 2027, but says they still want to film this year ]]> The Batman 2 director Matt Reeves has confirmed that the sequel will start filming this year, offering some reassurance to fans after the announcement of a new delay in the production.

Last month, Warner Bros revealed the film's release date has been pushed back a full year, and it's now set to open in theaters on October 1, 2027.

Reeves was asked about these changes during the Golden Globes red carpet, and he confirmed that things are in motion.

"I can tell you we're going to be shooting this year, and that we're excited about it," the filmmaker told Deadline.

"We’re doing something that absolutely continues where the story comes, but it's something that I hope people will be surprised by," he added.

When asked about the reasons behind the delay, Reeves told THR: "Because we're still finishing the script, and there's been so many things going on. Next year is very much about getting into production, and getting the movie going, and we're very excited about it".

The follow-up to 2022's The Batman was originally scheduled to arrive in October 2025, and it was then pushed back to October 2026. With a new delay confirmed, the film is taking two years longer than expected to hit theaters. According to Reeves' plans, a third movie will complete the new Batman trilogy, but we will have to wait even longer for that one.

For now, we can still enjoy this new Batman universe through the HBO spin-off series The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell as the titular DC villain. The first season is now available to watch on HBO in the US, and on Sky and NOW in the UK.

The Batman: Part 2 hits theaters on October 1, 2027. While you wait, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and TV shows for everything else that's on the way.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says we won't see Batman's origin in the DCU: "We don't need to hear the origin story again" ]]> Batman has debuted in the DCU thanks to Creature Commandos – and, according to James Gunn, we won't be seeing his origin story again.

Of course, Batman has probably one of the most famous superhero origins of all time, meaning we don't really need to see the tragic death of the Waynes play out on screen once more.

"He already exists in this universe, just like when we come to the Superman movie and we see that Superman already exists, he's already known by the people in Metropolis," Gunn told Rotten Tomatoes. "We don’t need to hear the origin story again. That’s just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe."

But, while Creature Commandos does mark the first appearance of the DCU Batman, there's still a lot about him left to discover.

"When they first showed the episode to me, there was a lot more Batman," Gunn commented. "And I said, 'I’m not ready to commit to that... more silhouette!'"

There is a DCU Batman movie on the way from The Flash director Andy Muschietti, while Matt Reeves's separate Batman universe also continues with the next movie (though it was recently delayed to October 1, 2027).

Next up for the DCU is Superman, which arrives this July 11. David Corenswet is taking over as the Man of Steel, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

<![CDATA[ With Jason Momoa switching Aquaman for Lobo, DC fans are convinced it's perfect casting ]]> Former Aquaman star Jason Momoa will play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. While it's a casting that has been rumored for some time, DC fans are still overjoyed by the change.

"Hell F***in Yeah... dude was born to play the role but was stuck with Aquaman," says one person, with another adding: "He's been prepping his entire life for this. Doesn't even need hair extensions"

"This is a good casting (Momoa's Aquaman was more Lobo than Arthur Curry already) but I can't say I want to see Lobo in the DCU. That said, it does feel like the sort of character James Gunn would like. Maybe they'll do something fun with him that'll make me like him. I do tend to appreciate him the most when he's juxtaposed with Superman so bouncing off of Supergirl should work," is another fan's verdict.

"The main man meets my man. Dude has the perfect energy for the role," says someone else. "I was wondering when he’d finally play Lobo. Just didn’t know which movie it’d be. He definitely fits it better than he did Aquaman!" says another fan.

"Damn. All this time I thought those rumors were just people wanting it real bad lol. Very pleasantly surprised to hear that's not the case!" says another person. "Looking forward to see how they incorporate Lobo into Woman of Tomorrow. Makes me wonder what kinds of changes/additions are going to be made to the story in the film."

Momoa confirmed his casting on Instagram, captioning a post featuring a past interview quote about how much he wants to play Lobo with "they called."

Next up for the DCU is Superman, which releases this July 11, while Creature Commandos continues weekly. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming DC movies and TV shows.

<![CDATA[ Nosferatu star Bill Skarsgård is interested in playing the Joker: "I think that would be pretty sick" ]]> Nosferatu star Bill Skarsgård may be well known for playing Pennywise in the It movies, but he's interested in playing another clown: the Joker.

"I was, like, a Batman kid. Batman was my superhero growing up," the actor said during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

When asked if he'd rather play Batman or Joker at this point in his career, he joked, "Maybe both," before continuing, "I don't know, man. I think there'd be a fucking cool Joker in me, probably, somewhere. I think that would be pretty sick."

Skarsgård then revealed that Heath Ledger is his favorite Joker. Watching his performance in The Dark Knight as a teenager and aspiring actor, Skarsgård added that "he represented everything that I wanted to be." The role was most recently taken on in live-action by Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Andy Muschietti, who Skarsgård previously worked with on It and It Chapter Two, is on board to direct a new Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, for James Gunn's DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Skarsgård remained vague on the topic, though, saying, "I don't know exactly where he is with it."

Skarsgård is currently playing the titular vampire in Nosferatu, directed by The Northman helmer Robert Eggers, alongside a cast that also includes Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Emma Corrin.

Nosferatu is out now in theaters. For more, check out our picks of the best upcoming movies on the way in 2025 and our guide to the new year's biggest movie release dates at a glance.

<![CDATA[ Creature Commandos gets a season 2 as James Gunn bestows us all with a monstrous holiday gift ]]> James Gunn's Creature Commandos animated streaming series has officially been renewed for a second season according to Gunn himself, who shared the good news on social media just in time for Christmas, along with a holiday card featuring the show's unlikely mascot Weasel.

"You wanted monsters? Well, you’re getting even more," Gunn says. "We’re coming back for season two! But don’t worry, we’ve still got plenty left this season for you. Catch new episodes of Creature Commandos every Thursday, with the season one finale dropping January 9 exclusively on Max."

Creature Commandos has proved to be a worthy first entry in the new DC Studios cinematic universe as well as a pitch-perfect continuation of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, two previous DC properties that are making the jump to the new continuity.

Still, there's a long way to go before the end of the first season, which, as Gunn points out, is still in the middle of airing. And considering how tragic the last couple episodes have been, who knows what the team will even look like by the time the season ends.

In fact, episode 4, 'Chasing Squirrels,' was so deeply heartbreaking (and emotionally affecting) that I took time out to explore what makes the episode, and its central character Weasel, so special, and so reflective of the larger themes of what the "Monsters" side of the so-called "Gods and Monsters" era of the burgeoning cinematic DC Universe is all about so far.

Up next, kinda more on the "Gods" side of the equation, is Gunn's Superman reboot movie, which just got a gorgeous first trailer that's setting hopes for the film quite high.

New episodes of Creature Commandos will premiere Thursdays on Max through early January. For more, check out our Creature Commandos review or our guide to the other best shows on HBO Max to add to your watchlist.

<![CDATA[ Superman’s super dog Krypto may look all innocent in the trailer, but James Gunn says he is a "terrible dog" and is based on his own mischievous mutt ]]> He may look all cute and innocent in the first trailer, but DC boss James Gunn says Superman’s dog Krypto is actually a pretty terrible pet.

"You'll see in the movie that Krypto probably comes off as a better dog in the trailer than he is in the movie," said writer and director Gunn at a Q&A session held after a press screening for the new Superman trailer (H/T IGN). "Pretty terrible dog! You love him because he's a dog and how can you not? And he's got the cute, innocent eyes, but he's a terrible dog."

The first Superman trailer, which dropped earlier this December, opens with star David Corenswet’s Superman lying injured on the snow with a bloody head when his pet dog Krypto runs to his recuse. At first glance, Kryto looks to be a fluffy white dog who seems to be loyal to his owner, however, based on Gunn’s comments, this may not be true.

The DC boss has previously admitted that Krypto is based on his own dog Ozu. Gunn took to Instagram to let fans know more about the badly behaved dog he adopted just after he started writing Superman.

"Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs and never knew human beings, was problematic, to say the least," Gunn said. "He immediately came in and destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture — he even ate my laptop… I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' — and thus Krypto came into the script and changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life."

Kicking off the movie portion of DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Superman follows the hero's double life as a being from planet Krypton and a reporter Clark Kent at The Daily Planet. The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Superman hits theatres on July 11, 2025. For more, see our guide on how to watch DC movies in order, or keep up with upcoming DC movies and TV shows.

<![CDATA[ Superman will "sort of" have a post-credits scene but it won't be similar to the "pain in the ass" story setup that James Gunn still regrets from Guardians of the Galaxy 2 ]]> Director James Gunn is taking one major "pain in the ass" lesson learned from his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and applying it to the post-credits scene in 2025's Superman.

Gunn told Phase Hero's Brandon Davis that there will "sort of" be an end-credits stinger to the David Corenswet-starring DCU movie, but it won't be taking cues from the introduction of Adam Warlock in one of multiple Guardians of the Galaxy 2 post-credits scenes.

"If you look at my credits scene on the Marvel movies, the one time I fucked myself was when I put Adam Warlock in because then I'm like, 'Oh shit, now I gotta put Adam Warlock in the next movie.' Which actually was a pain in the ass," Gunn revealed.

Adam Warlock was eventually introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and played by Will Poulter. Before that, the character was introduced as part of Ayesha's grand plans to put an end to the Guardians. Reading between the lines, though, it's clear Gunn doesn't want to overpromise and tag too much onto the end of Superman.

"So, I'm not gonna set up whole universes with end-credit scenes," Gunn explained. "I love giving audiences who sit through all of the credits end-credits scenes but I'd rather it be something that's fun for fans and not necessarily, 'Hey, we're setting up the next whole part of the universe.' Because I know how it goes and I know what it's like… You think of the best credits scene, but then you gotta adhere to that down the road."

Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, is set to fly into cinemas on July 11, 2025. It's also the first live-action project from the rebooted DCU Chapter One.

The new Superman trailer also showcased the litany of DC heroes and villains on the way – including one hidden character skulking around in literally two seconds of footage.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn teases the Superman runtime – and don't expect a The Batman-style three-hour epic ]]> Superman director James Gunn has given fans the briefest of teases for the upcoming DCU movie's runtime – and it's clear that we shouldn't be expecting a three-hour epic in the vein of The Batman or Avengers: Endgame.

According to ComicBook, Gunn said the Superman runtime is "well under three hours… Under two and a half."

For anyone curious, Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy clocked in between two hours (the first Guardians movie ran for 122 minutes) and two-and-a-half hours (Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was a series-long 149 minutes). Gunn's comments, though, would suggest Superman is aiming for the 120-to-140 minute range, which takes it in line with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (143 minutes).

The first Superman trailer, though, proved that – no matter the runtime – the DCU movie isn't lacking in either scale or scope.

Despite packing the trailer out with heroes and villains (including David Corenswet's Superman, Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner), there was one secret figure hiding at the 90-second mark: The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), a member of the anti-hero group The Authority.

Superman is set to form part of DCU Chapter One, Gunn and fellow DC Studios' co-CEO's first wave of projects. They initially included five shows and five movies, including a Booster Gold series and a brand-new Batman project but, as of right now, only the likes of Peacemaker season 2, a Clayface movie, Lanterns, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (starring House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock) are likely coming within the next few years.

<![CDATA[ Superman's first trailer features a hidden DC villain that required a James Gunn tease before anyone found them ]]> Director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed that there's a hidden DC villain in the new Superman trailer – and fans figured out the blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in just a few hours.

As shown on actor María Gabriela de Faría's Instagram Story, Gunn challenged the audience to find where de Faría's The Engineer crops up in the Superman teaser.

Remarkably, it only took someone a few hours to figure it out. World's Greatest Detective, eat your heart out.

As pointed out by Revistacine on Threads, you can see The Engineer skulking about on the rooftop of the Luthercorp building. You can see it for yourself below or at 1:30 in the trailer itself. Gunn even replied, saying, "Haha, you are correct!"

While the Superman trailer has made a fuss out of many of its heroes and villains – Lex Luthor, Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl to name but a few – we've heard precious little about The Engineer, AKA Angela Spica.

In DC's comics, she's part of The Authority, a group of more hardline superheroes who were assembled by Superman after he began losing his powers.

While DC Studios hasn't officially confirmed which side of the hero/villain divide the character will sit on, we definitely know that The Authority (of which The Engineer is a part) will get their own feature film - and it sounds like they're up to no good.

The Authority will take matters "into their own hands to do what they believe is right," per the movie's official synopsis in 2023.

"Whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, you know, whatever they want to do to make the world better," Gunn previously outlined.

To double down on their shades-of-gray standing, co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran compared the team to Jack Nicholson's character in A Few Good Men. So they'll be villains in some people's eyes, but ultimately feel like they're doing the right thing for the greater good. All told, it's the sort of complex morality that could spark further interest in the DCU.

De Faría joins a cast that includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also features Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Anthony Carrigan.

Superman, directed by James Gunn, kicks off the live-action portion of DCU Chapter One on July 11, 2025.

<![CDATA[ Batman V. Superman star Jesse Eisenberg thinks that playing Lex Luthor in the poorly received film "hurt [his] career in a real way" ]]> Jesse Eisenberg says that playing Lex Luthor in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hurt his career "in a real way".

"I was in this Batman movie and the Batman movie was so poorly received, and I was so poorly received," Eisenberg told Dax Shepherd on his Armchair Expert podcast. "I’ve never said this before and it’s kind of embarrassing to admit, but I genuinely think it actually hurt my career in a real way, because I was poorly received in something so public. I've been in poorly received things that just don't see the light of day, and for the most part, no one knows, but this was so public, and I don’t read notices or reviews or movie press or anything, so I was unaware of how poorly it was received."

The Zack Snyder-directed pic was part of the now defunct DCEU, and saw Lex Luthor (Eisenberg) manipulate Batman (Ben Affleck) into a battle with Superman (Henry Cavill) - who Luthor is canonically obsessed with destroying.

It was a box office success, grossing $874 million against a budget of $250 million, but was widely hated by critics and fans alike. The movie currently holds a 29% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 63% audience score.

Some critics commented that Eisenberg's mannerisms as Lex Luthor were too close to Heather Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight, with Gizmodo writing that someone must have told Eisenberg that "Batman v. Superman is the Dark Knight to Man of Steel's Batman Begins".

Nicholas Hoult has taken over the role for the new DCU, and we get a glimpse at him (and his very shiny head) in the first trailer for James Gunn's Superman.

Eisenberg can be seen next in A Real Pain, which is in theaters now. Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. For more, check out our list of all the upcoming DC movies and shows you need to know about.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn explains how his Superman movie strikes a balance between Silver Age comic book aesthetics and modern storytelling ]]> The first official trailer for James Gunn's Superman reboot movie has arrived, and viewers are already noticing the film's apparent Silver Age inspired tone, with its bright colors and big sci-fi concepts. But Gunn himself says the film relies on striking a powerful balance between that kind of classic Superman imagery and more modern storytelling.

Speaking at a press conference for the trailer's premiere which GamesRadar+ attended, Gunn explains that, while the aesthetic of the Silver Age is important to his film, the story itself is much more character driven than the often very surface level comics of the '50s and '60s.

"I love the Silver Age of Comics in terms of the aesthetics of it, but I think, like I said at the beginning, it isn't completely that," Gunn explains. "It's also taking the character of Superman and really getting into who he is as an individual and what his personal obstacles are in this film. I think that's a really big difference from not only other superheroes, but other superhero films. This is a story about a man and both his external and internal obstacles and what he's facing in life, and that's what the film is about. And so although some of the imagery is very Silver Age, I don't think that's a very Silver Age plot. So it has elements of both the traditional and the new. And I think that's where we find our balance."

Still, Gunn found a particular challenge in making sure to meet fan expectations of Superman's portrayal, while also finding ways to innovate with his new film. He states that the key lies in finding an "authentic" angle for his story and characters.

"It was trying to balance what was classic and what was completely new, which could be a brace at the time, because Superman is such a big character," he says. "Superman is one of the most popular characters, famous characters, in the world, and everyone has their idea of what he should be like, what his costume should look like, what his moral should be, what his power set is."

"And so finding something that was as true and as authentic as I could possibly make it, because at the end of the day, if I can make something that's authentic, then I think it works," Gunn continues. "And so I think that balancing was just something that was trial and error, trial and error, trial and error, both in writing the script and working with Juliana, our costume designer, and working with the VFX folks and what we, you know, make our giant monsters and robots look like, to give it that feeling of the Silver Age stuff, but again, also to see those things as a grounded way that we haven't seen them before, is what makes the movie."

We'll get to see for ourselves when Superman releases in July.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn explains how All-Star Superman influenced his reboot movie, especially Nicholas Hoult's "badass" Lex Luthor ]]> Writer/director James Gunn has made no secret about the influence his upcoming Superman reboot movie has taken from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's classic comic book All-Star Superman. And now, with the release of the first official trailer for Superman, Gunn is opening up about the influence the story has had on his film - especially its portrayal of Lex Luthor.

"I mean, All-Star Superman, there's a couple of them, but All-Star Superman is the thing that we borrow the most heavily from," Gunn states at a press event for the trailer's premiere, which GamesRadar+ attended.

"Our plot has nothing to do with All-Star Superman, but some of the aesthetics of what Grant wrote and what Frank drew were incredibly influential," he continues. "They also had that sort of science fiction, and the idea of Lex as a mad science sorcerer, almost. You know, science is his own sort of sorcery. And the giant, you know, the monsters and the threats and all of that the Silver Age look through a green lens. I think a lot of that was taken from All-Star Superman, and that was my biggest one, for sure. Also my favorite."

In terms of Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult in the film, Gunn goes on to describe him as a "badass," and "intimidating".

"Oh my god. I've been holding everything. I have these pictures on my phone. I mean, he is, when Nick Holt is Lex Luthor… Every woman in my life was like, oh my god, I love me a bald man," Gunn quips. "Oh, yeah, he's intimidating. He's a badass, but he's got his reasons. He's not without his reasons for what he's doing. And I think Nick is just a fantastic actor to work with."

So there you have it - Lex Luthor's portrayal in the new Superman movie will take some interesting notes from All-Star Superman. In that comic, Lex develops a serum that temporarily allows him to develop the same powers as Superman, leading to the story's climactic moment. While Gunn states that All-Star Superman doesn't directly inform the plot of his Superman movie, it's not impossible that something like this could be adapted as an element of the movie.

After all, the trailer shows Superman beaten and bloodied - a rare sight which could come at the hands of an empowered Lex Luthor.

We'll find out when the film releases this summer.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says the Superman trailer really captures the "essence" of the upcoming DC movie: "Optimistic but not without its darker moments" ]]> James Gunn says the long-awaited trailer for his highly-anticipated Superman movie captures the true "essence" of the first film in the newly established DCU.

Speaking at a trailer launch event GamesRadar+ attended earlier this week, Gunn dived deeper into his intentions with the teaser explaining: "I think I wanted the trailer to really get the essence of the film. You know, the film is optimistic, yet not without its darker moments. It's a big science fiction movie, but at the same time, incredibly grounded in the way we treat the characters and everything else. So I wanted it to be something that was the essence of Superman, that was the Superman that I grew up with, that I love, but also something new at the same time."

The filmmaker said taking on Superman has been "paradoxical," explaining that the "traditional aspects of Superman, the hope and the honesty and the goodness in the sort of gung ho qualities of Superman, in this day and age end up being pretty wild and alternative, almost."

Written and directed by Gunn, the upcoming pic follows a younger Superman (as in much younger than Henry Cavill) as he embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. The trailer is an epic, action-packed first look at the upcoming pic, featuring Krypto the Superdog (who we have not seen on the big screen in quite some time), a bruised and bloody Superman, a mid-air kiss between Superman and Lois Lane, Lex Luthor wielding a gun, some explosions, and a very sweet kid holding up a flag with the Superman symbol on it, hoping it summon him.

David Corenswet plays the titular hero, with Rachel Brosnahan as his love interest and roving Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane. The cast also includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag St., Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Continued Gunn: "So I think that that's really the heart of what the movie is. And get, you know, giving some semblance of the big science fiction moments you know, being able to catch a glimpse of Krypto, who's who's an important character. And, of course, seeing the relationship between Clark and Lois, which I think is unlike anything we've ever seen in any media, for Lois and Superman, being able to see that, get a glimpse of that and how amazing Rachel is."

<![CDATA[ Superman trailer breakdown: from Metamorpho to Hawkgirl, all the DC Easter eggs and details we spotted ]]> James Gunn's Superman has got its first trailer and it's an epic glimpse into the live-action world of the new DCU. It features first looks at most of the major characters, as well as our best idea yet at what David Corenswet's version of Clark Kent will be like. From the teaser alone too, it seems like this will be a gritty and brutal introduction to the iconic superhero. You can watch it below:

Below, we get into our trailer breakdown of the stand-out moments in the first teaser, including what it tells us about the story. We've also rounded up all the comic book references and Easter eggs we've spotted too to help you get to grips with Metropolis. So, what are we waiting for, let's get stuck in…

Krypto to the rescue

Krypto the dog in Superman

The trailer begins with Superman falling from the sky into the snow, looking beaten and bloody. James Gunn teased that the movie would see Supes fleeing from the Fortress of Solitude at one point, and it feels like this might be then. He whistles and his trusty companion Krypto the dog comes to him. "Home, take me home," he tells him as Krypto starts dragging him to safety.

Lois Lane

Lois Lane in Superman

Throughout the teaser trailer we see scenes of Clark Kent and Lois Lane intercut with the Superman scenes. In some, the pair are working at the Daily Planet, and intriguingly, in others, Lois is interacting with Clark in his Superman suit, showing that it's clearly an open secret between the pair. Judging by the numerous kisses too, it's not the source of any conflict either.

Lex Luthor

Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in Superman

The trailer also gives us our first proper look at Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor in action. In one shot he's at LuthorCorp, his billion dollar foundation. Meanwhile, in another he's holding a gun while Supes is seemingly being kept in a glass cage. It doesn't look like everything is going his way though as in the final shot we see of him, he's bruised, bloody, and looking vengeful.

Farm life

Superman on the farm in Smallville

We get a glimpse of Kent's life in Smallville as well in the trailer, which sees him sitting on a step with his adoptive father Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince). The pair seem to be talking through something painful, but we can't hear the dialogue over the epic new theme.

Boravian border

Superman movie

Some action in the trailer takes place at the Boravian border where a young boy is seen raising Superman's logo on a flag and calling for him to come to them. Later on, we see on a television report that this conflict is happening at the Boravian border. Boravia has some history in Superman's own backstory and in the comics was a country in Europe consumed by civil war.

Guy Gardner

Guy Gardner Green Lantern in Superman

Superman is introducing a whole load of characters, and among them is Guy Gardner, who is played by Nathan Fillion in the movie. We see him in a brief moment in the trailer firing green lazers as Superman is hunched over inside of Stagg Industries. This is the chemical and genetic research center in the DC comics that was founded by Simon Stagg and is a key part of Metamorpho's origins.

Metamorpho

Metamorpho in Superman

Speaking of Metamorpho, we get our first look at the character in action in the trailer too. His design is pretty epic, with blue tinged skin, blue eyes, and veins on his face. He's played by Anthony Carrigan in this version and according to The Hollywood Reporter, his character is an archaeologist who can "transmute elements in his body into various forms".

Mister Terrific

Mister Terrific in Superman

We also get our first look at Edi Gathegi's superhero Mister Terrific in his suit. He can be seen using some kind of shield against gunfire at one point in the teaser trailer.

Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl in Superman

There's not much of a look at Hawkgirl in the trailer, but she can be seen flying through the sky at one point. We know she'll be played by Alien: Romulus actor Isabela Merced in the new movie.

Love soars

Superman and Lois Lane in Superman

Near the end of the trailer, we get an iconic Superman image: Supes and Lois flying in the sky while kissing. It's been a staple of the comics and movie adaptations alike, and it's really neat to see Gunn calling back to that here as well.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says Superman's been less popular in recent years, but there's a surprisingly simple reason his is the first movie in the DCU ]]> James Gunn has a pretty simple reason for why Superman is the first feature-length project in the DCU.

Speaking to press at an event GamesRadar+ attended earlier this week, ahead of the launch of the Superman trailer, Gunn spoke about why he wanted this to be the first movie in the DCU.

He explains: "Probably the fact that I had started writing it before I came to DC Studios has something to do with it. But listen, [with] DC, Superman is the first superhero. We have seen Batman in recent years. We have seen Wonder Woman in recent years, and that's the trinity, as they say, and Superman, we haven't seen as much of on the movie screens."

Gunn continues: "So being able to take Superman and play with that character was something that I was excited about. I'm living Peter Safran's dream, he's my partner, and all he's wanted to do in his whole life is create a Superman movie."

Gunn and Safran were first announced as co-CEOs in the newly established DC Studios back in 2022, and unveiled their first slate of projects in 2023. The first era of the DCU (formerly known as the DCEU), is titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and kicked off with the R-rated animated series Creature Commandos on December 5. Superman is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2025, with Peacemaker season 2 coming shortly after.

Before Gunn and Safran's takeover, Man of Steel 2 starring Henry Cavill was thought to be in the works - but was never officially announced. Gunn's vision for the next Superman film involved a younger Clark Kent - which brought about David Corenswet's casting. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel herself, Rachel Brosnahan, is set to play Lois Lane.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says he is bringing back that iconic John Williams score in Superman to "pay tribute" to when he first heard it as a child ]]> The new Superman trailer boasts many nostalgic moments for die-hard fans of the Kryptonian, including the original John Williams score – a detail that stems from DC boss James Gunn's own lifelong love of the hero.

"I mean, the John Williams scores… it's one of the greatest scores of all time. And you know, it's the thing I loved when I saw the movie as a child," said Gunn at a press conference for the launch of the Superman trailer attended by GamesRadar+. "If that was the thing I liked the most, was the score, I wanted to pay tribute to that." Watch the new trailer below.

The legendary composer was behind the original score for the 1978 film Superman, but the song has fallen out of favor with Superman movies in recent years. In 2013, Zack Snyder opted for a Hans Zimmer theme for his Man of Steel flick, as well as its following sequels.

However, the score is back with composer John Murphy putting his own spin on it. Gunn recalled his first meetings with Murphy over the movie's score: "When I first talked to John Murphy, who's our composer, you know, I was like, 'Listen, I want you to do something completely out there.'" The DC boss added that the movie is "all about this score" and that the two started working on the score long before the screenplay was even finished.

"I wanted at least part of the Williams theme in there as part of something… John Murphy, just took to the challenge 100% and made something really beautiful. And when you hear the whole score and you hear what I mean," said Gunn. "It's a mix of the new and traditional in a way that we haven't quite seen. But also, I think it's soul food, you know."

Gunn's upcoming Superman flick, previously titled Superman: Legacy, kicks off the movie portion of his brainchild DCU Chapter One. Superman stars David Corenswet as our favorite Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent who, when he takes his glasses off, turns into the titular hero. The movie follows Superman as he balances his Kryptonian and human heritage whilst also trying to save the world.

The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and more.

<![CDATA[ Epic Superman trailer features a bloody and bruised Clark Kent, the first look at Lex Luthor, and introduces a whole bunch of heroes to James Gunn's DCU ]]>

The Superman trailer is finally here and it seems like James Gunn has pulled out the big guns out for this one. You can watch it above

The hugely anticipated DC adaptation, which kicks off the whole new DCU Chapter One, has a lot of hype around it. Now we can see why too as David Corenswet flies onto our screens as the Man of Steel in the first teaser for Superman.

Also starring Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the trailer gives our first hint at what to expect from the Superman reboot. It all begins with Supes crash-landing on a frozen planet looking bruised and beaten. He calls out for Krypto who comes to his rescue, dragging him home.

The rest of the dialogue-free trailer is set to the epic new theme as we see Superman in both his costume and Clark Kent guise in several scenes with Lois Lane. Elsewhere, in the epic teaser, we get our first look at several major new DC introductions, including Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and someone who seems to be Metamorpho.

Hoult's Lex Luthor also looms heavy over the first teaser, featured looking murderous with a gun as well as looking beaten and bloody at another point. It seems like Superman has his hands full in the new reboot, which will kick off the new era of live-action DC.

The supporting cast of Superman is pretty stacked too with Gunn pulling together a list of stellar talent. The Last of Us season 2 star Isabela Merced plays Hawkgirl, House actor Edi Gathegi is Mister Terrific, Barry's Anthony Carrigan is Metamorpho, and Castle's Nathan Fillion is Green Lantern.

The movie takes a lot of inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, focusing on Clark Kent's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his upbringing in Kansas.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. For more upcoming superhero movies, check out our guides to all the new DC movies and shows as well as all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows you need to know about.

<![CDATA[ Superman's James Gunn explains why 'Legacy' was dropped from the title: "When you see the movie, you'll understand" ]]> When James Gunn's Superman movie was first announced, it was officially titled Superman: Legacy – but the subtitle was later dropped with no explanation. Now, the director has revealed why the one-word name suits the film better, telling fans that everything will become clearer once they see it.

During a set visit earlier this year, the new DC Studios boss recalled how he and his fellow creatives would do 'pre-mortems' throughout production, where they'd openly anticipate ways in which the movie could fail. Together, they discuss the script, casting, communication between teams, and more, for the purpose of highlighting what could be improved before it's too late.

"We go into a room with me and all the department heads and we say, 'Let's say this movie is a colossal f***-up," Gunn told ComicBook. "We find out two years from now when this movie comes out, it goes terribly wrong. What are we doing right now that we're not talking about, that we're doing this, making this movie wrong?'

"Everybody is allowed, from transportation to whatever, they're all allowed to say what they think. And I found it extremely helpful. One of the things was, maybe the title… had a looking back feeling about it, and this isn't about looking back, this is about looking forward," he detailed. "When you see the movie, you'll understand where 'Legacy' comes from because it is, again, it's about Clark and his relationship to the script … and whose legacy is he, really? And so it's about that. But I think as a title … it felt too looking back."

Starring Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and David Corenswet, Superman centers on a younger Kal-El as he juggles his crime-fighting duties with his more human responsibilities at The Daily Planet. Beyond that, it's a bit of a mystery, though we do know Lex Luthor, one of Superman's most notorious enemies, will feature. The first teaser trailer, due to drop tomorrow (December 19) should give us some more insight, too.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn shares another Superman trailer teaser, this time with a first look at Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen - and the perfect tagline ]]> It's a bird, it's a plane, it's yet another teaser for the first trailer for James Gunn's Superman.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, we get our first look at the Daily Planet and its staff, which consists of none other than Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Steve Lombard (Beck Bennett), Cat Grant (Mikaela Hoover), and Ron Troupe (Christopher McDonald). The teaser then cuts to the tagline, "Look up," and sees people looking towards the sky as David Corenswet's red-caped hero zooms into sight.

From what we've seen so far, it's starting to feel like OG, late '70s, early '80s Christopher Reeve Superman with a modern spin - and that's all I could ever ask for, personally.

There is also now a live stream and live chat in anticipation for the trailer, where fans can share the hype with each other - and maybe possibly complain about those silly red trunks Superman is wearing in his new DCU costume, though Gunn did specify that Corenswet's Clark Kent wears them to "make kids less afraid" of him by "dressing like a professional wrestler".

The cast includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo is also set to make an appearance as Rick Flag Sr. in the upcoming film - which makes us wonder if Peacemaker and Superman will meet each other some day.

<![CDATA[ Superman director James Gunn explains how Top Gun: Maverick influenced the upcoming DC movie ]]> Superman director James Gunn has explained how Tom Cruise's action sequel Top Gun: Maverick influenced the upcoming comic book movie.

The filmmaker, who's set to kick off a new era of DC-related content with his take on the Man of Steel in 2025, told ComicBook during a set visit that he recalled being keen to "keep it alive in the air, as well as on the ground" and, well, when you're dealing with a superhero who can fly, that requires a lot of prep. With that, Gunn wrote up a "big document" breaking down how the flick's action could be shot, pre-emptively trying to navigate the challenges of filming sequences in the sky.

"We took a lot from films like Top Gun: Maverick, which, we are shooting flying things," he continued. "We shoot a lot of our action with actual drones flying in and around Superman and the people that he's flying with, The Engineer, whoever else, that he's fighting up in the air. We did that on sound stages.

"We got these really small, crazy drones now. We've got some of the best flyers in the world here who are working with it. And so we use those guys a lot and everything's planned out with me, as it always is. But at the same time, I've gotten even more into finding new stuff on the set and new moments and exploring that stuff, finding magic where it is."

Starring Isabela Merced, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and David Corenswet, Superman will reportedly focus on a young Kal-El as he juggles his crime-fighting duties with his more human responsibilities at The Daily Planet. Beyond that, it's a bit of a mystery, though we do know Lex Luthor, one of Superman's most notorious enemies, will feature.

According to The Wrap, Gunn was also inspired by the original movie starring Richard Donner, though "it's very different from that", as well as the comic book All-Star Superman.

<![CDATA[ Superman star David Corenswet is responsible for those traditional trunks, convincing DCU boss James Gunn who was "on the no trunks team" ]]> James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie will feature one very iconic piece of costume, the hero’s traditional red trunks. But the DC boss said he was originally against the idea of bringing back the underwear-like accessory, that is until star David Corenswet convinced him otherwise.

"We were trying on all these different versions, and we screen tested with trunks and no trunks, and one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him," said Gunn in an interview with Gizmodo during a set visit.

"He's this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary, individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope that shows that positivity. And that really clicked in for me."

Gunn admits that he was "on the no trunks team" at first, but came around to Corenswet's comments. "I think trying to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have some frivolity to it at its base, trying to make it look serious, is silly because he is a superhero," said Gunn. "He’s the first one, brightly colored, and that’s who he is."

We first got a look at Corenswet in the iconic red trunks in leaked set photos, and then again in the first poster for Superman. This is the first time we have seen the hero in the trunks since the 2006 movie Superman Returns, as after that, Man of Steel helmer Zack Snyder famously got rid of them.

Kicking off the film portion of Gunn’s DCU Chapter One, Superman stars Corenswet as The Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent AKA hero Superman as he struggles to balance his Kryptonian and human heritage. The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult. That's pretty much all we know so far, but more will certainly be revealed when the first trailer is released this Thursday.

Superman swoops into theaters on July 11, 2025. For more, see our guide on how to watch DC movies in order, and keep up with upcoming DC movies and TV shows.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says there are "two little things" that set up the DCU's future in Superman, but don't expect major post-credits teases: "If something’s there just to set up something else, f**k it" ]]> James Gunn isn't pulling any punches when it comes to his new DCU's philosophy of teasing future projects in movies and TV shows – even going as far as confirming only "two little things" will set up the cinematic universe's future in 2025's Superman.

As per ComicBook, Gunn – Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO alongside Peter Safran – said that Superman will have "maybe two little things, two little moments" that set up the DCU's future.

Gunn added, “If something’s there just to set up something else, fuck it. I even say that."

For Gunn, every moment – post-credits scene or otherwise – has to be in service of the movie. The only exception? If it's putting pieces in place for characters that "exist in other media". Even then, it sounds like something Gunn isn't overly fond of – a far cry from his former employers Marvel Studios and its tendency to stuff movies with post-credits teases that won't be paid off for several years.

“If that [post-credits scene] works in tandem with setting up characters that exist in other media, then that’s great. If this sets up stuff in Peacemaker, which it does, then that’s great,” Gunn said.

“But that is never, ever, ever, with me, going to be something that I’m going to sacrifice even a moment or a beat in a story for, especially a movie. With TV, you’ve got a little bit more leniency to be able to do that. But in a movie, every beat has to be in there for the movie itself.”

DCU Chapter One, the brainchild of Gunn and Safran, has kicked off in earnest with Creature Commandos – with multiple new projects also in the works.

Superman, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, is set for release on July 11, 2025. The first trailer will be released this Thursday. From there, the likes of the True Detective-inspired Lanterns, Peacemaker season 2, and a Clayface movie penned by The Haunting of Hill House's Mike Flanagan.

Of those, Peacemaker season 2 has wrapped filming and Lanterns is in pre-production, with John Stewart actor Aaron Pierre praising the "elite" talent involved in a new interview with GamesRadar+.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn shares new look at Superman with first poster and teaser for official trailer ]]> The first official poster for James Gunn's Superman is here - and the first official trailer is arriving later this week.

Gunn took to Instagram to share the moving poster, which sees David Corenswet's Man of Steel in flight, as well as a brief teaser to let us know that the trailer is coming this Thursday. You can check out the poster and teaser below.

The film marks the first feature-length entry in Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC slate titled "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters." The slate kicked off in December with Creature Commandos, an R-rated, NSFW animated series that sees Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assemble a new black ops team, this time consisting solely of monsters.

The upcoming pic follows a younger Superman (David Corenswet) as he embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. Written and directed by Gunn, the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Frank Grillo also reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr. from Creature Commandos, with Saturday Night Live alum Beck Bennett as Daily Planet reporter Steve Lombard and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner aka the Green Lantern. After Superman flies into theaters, Peacemaker season 2 is set to hit Max.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. For more, check out our list of all the upcoming DC movies and shows you need to know about.

<![CDATA[ Sgt. Rock - The comic history of the classic DC war hero who might be played Daniel Craig in a new film ]]> Former James Bond actor Daniel Craig is in talks to portray classic DC character Sgt. Rock - which could be extra intriguing given that the character just made his official cinematic DC Universe debut in episode 3 of Creature Commandos, which delves into the backstory of GI Robot (voiced by Sean Gunn).

While we won't get into any big spoilers about what happens in the episode, now is the perfect time to get into the comic book history of Sgt. Rock and the soldiers of Easy Company, who he's been leading into battle on the comic page since the late '50s.

Way back then, at the dawn of the so-called Silver Age of comics, war comics were far more popular than most superheroes, with only a select few like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman having survived the growing pains of the superhero bust of the early '50s. And Sgt. Franklin John Rock, who debuted in 1959's Our Army at War #89 by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert after a few similar prototype characters, would go on to become one of the most popular war comic heroes of all time.

In his civilian life, Rock is usually depicted as a steel mill worker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who enlists in the US Army after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the event that spurred the United States to enter WWII after starting out as a nominally neutral nation. From there, Rock goes on to become the leader of Easy Company, his band of soldiers who also appear in Creature Commandos episode 3.

Though the adventures of Sgt. Rock and Easy Company were initially set in a fictionalized version of the real world, rather than the DC Universe, over the years, the character and his troops were eventually brought into the official DC timeline, crossing over with the WWII-era heroes of the Justice Society and other DC characters.

And while there is one version of Sgt. Rock's story that says his life ended when he was shot by the last enemy bullet fired at the last battle of WWII, a rebooted version of his timeline includes him going on to have post-war adventures alongside Batman, Superman, and even the Suicide Squad. He even fought against zombies in the 2022 DC horror comic Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead, which was actually written by fan-favorite actor (and experienced zombie fighter) Bruce Campbell.

Sgt. Rock fighting against a horde of zombies

Interestingly enough, Sgt. Rock and GI Robot really don't have much shared comic history, despite both being WWII-era heroes. But that shared connection makes their crossover in Creature Commandos make perfect sense - and provides a bit of excitement for old-school DC fans who will recognize Sgt. Rock and Easy Company.

It also raises the question of whether the Sgt. Rock of Creature Commandos and the one who could potentially be played by Daniel Craig will be one and the same, and if so, if GI Robot could in fact show up in a live action Sgt. Rock film - or even some version of the Suicide Squad, given his comic history.

DC Studios Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have expressed a desire to have actors who portray the voices of characters in animation play them in live action and vice versa, a rule which could be broken early on if Daniel Craig takes on the role of Sgt. Rock, as the character is voiced in Creature Commandos by actor Maury Sterling. But it's hard to not give them some leeway, considering Craig's apparent Sgt. Rock film, which is to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, didn't apparently enter into the equation until long after Creature Commandos was already completed - and it's not even fully official yet.

Whatever happens, the groundwork to include a hero like Sgt. Rock in the live-action side of the new cinematic DC Universe is already laid as of Creature Commandos season 3. And with an actor like Daniel Craig potentially in the mix, along with a director as skilled as Luca Guadagnino, it's hard not to think about the possibilities for a totally different kind of superhero war movie.

Dig into all the Easter eggs, cameos, and hidden references in every episode of Creature Commandos, and make sure to stay up to date on the streaming series' release schedule.

<![CDATA[ A year after pitching the idea to DC, Mike Flanagan is officially writing a Clayface movie ]]> A new movie about Batman villain Clayface is officially in the works at DC Studios, and The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan is writing the script after he first pitched the project to DC back in 2023.

The Batman director Matt Reeves is on board as a producer and filming is due to start in early 2025. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps but, back in 2021, Flanagan tweeted that he was "really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy." With Netflix series like Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher and movies like Doctor Sleep under his belt, it's safe to assume that his take on Clayface will also be a horror project.

The antagonist, best known for his shape-shifting abilities, first appeared in DC Comics all the way back in 1940. On the screen, animated versions of Clayface have been voiced by Ron Perlman and, more recently, Alan Tudyk. In live-action, the character was played by Brian McManamon in Gotham and Lorraine Burrough in Pennyworth.

Next up for Flanagan is The Life of Chuck, which he wrote and directed, starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, and Mark Hamill. Based on the novella of the same name by Stephen King, the movie is made up of three separate parts that, together, tell the story of a man's life in reverse. The movie arrives in theaters on May 30, 2025.

While we wait for Clayface to hit the big screen, check out our guide to the other upcoming superhero movies on the way in 2025 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn clarifies that Superman is having "no reshoots": "Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film" ]]> Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has cleared up whether the movie is going through reshoots or not.

"Sort of," Gunn said on Threads, when asked if it was true that Superman was undergoing additional filming. "Not a few days. We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film."

So, while additional material is being shot, it doesn't sound like it's anything that would substantially change the film – instead, it's extra shots to slot into the movie.

Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and Gunn has had high praise for his leading man. "Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is," he said recently. "He is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible."

The rest of the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

While Superman is the first DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters movie, the first TV show, Creature Commandos, is available now on Max. Check out our Creature Commandos review for our spoiler-free verdict, or our Creature Commandos release schedule to keep up to date.

<![CDATA[ A more detailed look at the Superman logo has been revealed – and it's bringing back memories for DC fans ]]> A new look at the Superman logo has been revealed, and it's reminding DC fans of other iconic portrayals of the hero.

The new look comes courtesy of merchandise at CCXP, and it shows the familiar crest – along with a new font for the title.

"The font looks a LOT like the Reeve era," says one DC fan, while another says: "I really like it, looks like Returns"

"I love that font, also reminds me of the Returns font," agrees another person, and someone else is getting Richard Donner vibes from a new shirt for the movie: "I’m loving the Donner-esque look the SUPERMAN shirt has."

"Seeing the logo of the costume that David Corenswet will use in the film, modified to clearly pay homage to Richard Donner's #Superman ..... man, I find it simply fantastic and poetic!" says another fan.

Gunn has recently teased that everyone will be blown away by Corenswet's performance as Supes, too. "Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is," the DC Studios co-CEO teased. "He is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible."

Superman arrives on July 11, 2025. Before that, though, is Creature Commandos, which has kicked off on Max now. For more, check out our Creature Commandos review, or our Creature Commandos release schedule to keep up to date.

<![CDATA[ James Gunn says new Superman star David Corenswet is going to "freak everyone out" with his performance ]]> James Gunn has given a new update on his upcoming Superman, and he's just as enthusiastic as ever about his Clark Kent. David Corenswet takes on the role for the new movie, and Gunn says he thinks the actor is going to seriously impress audiences.

"Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, David Corenswet is going to freak everyone out with how great he is," the DC Studios head told The Hollywood Reporter. "He is one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with, and he can do everything. The man is incredible."

We've only had a brief shot of the Pearl star in character as Supes so far, thanks to an early image shared of Clark Kent suiting up. However, Gunn has shared that the Superman trailer is ready to go so we may get a better idea of what to expect very soon. In the interview with THR, Gunn also revealed that test screenings have begun for Superman as well.

Superman marks the first movie of Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran's rebooted DCU but the first TV show has already been released. Creature Commandos, a new animated series about some misfit monster heroes, has kicked off on Max.

Comparing the two, Gunn explained: "Superman is an enormous bear of a movie. It’s completely different from this show in every way, but it’s very much fantastic as well." Creature Commandos is airing new episodes weekly, and you can check out our Creature Commandos release schedule for how to watch those.

<![CDATA[ Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo says Peacemaker season 2 is all about revenge, teases his role in James Gunn's Superman ]]> Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr. in the new animated series, but the role doesn't stop there.

"In Creature Commandos, I got the uniform. I got the yellow shirt and the hair, and, you know, he's really part of that world. And then in Superman and even more so in Peacemaker, I take over for Viola Davis in what she was the leader of Argus. So now I become almost an administrator," Grillo explains I'm wearing a suit. I go from being boots on the ground badass to now being in charge, which enables me then to find out the truth about my son because now I can see things that I couldn't see before. And, it just makes my passion for revenge even stronger."

Rick Flag Sr. is the father of Rick Flag Jr., who was murdered by Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad. In Creature Commandos, Flag joins Amanda Waller (Davis) in forming a new, unconventional team of superheroes, and takes over. The role continues on in Peacemaker season 2, where Flag - using his newfound position - will confront Peacemaker once and for all. Flag is also set to make an appearance in Superman, the first feature-length project in Gunn's new DCU, though we don't know exactly how Flag will fit into that world just yet.

Grillo goes on to confirm that revenge is a big part, if not the main part, of Peacemaker season 2.

"It really is. It doesn't go without me. I still understand the capacity of which I have to serve this world," Grillo continues. "It's a big responsibility, and so I have to be careful so that it doesn't go too far, which has been fun as an actor to kind of balance that thing. John Cena and I have a pretty serious epic scene that culminates with all this anger."

Creature Commandos is set to hit Max on Thursday, December 5. Peacemaker season 2 is set to premiere sometime in 2025. Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. <![CDATA[ Daniel Craig and Challengers director Luca Guadagnino are looking to join James Gunn's DC Universe with Sgt. Rock movie ]]> In the midst of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn offering updates on projects like Peacemaker season 2 and his Batman reboot The Brave and the Bold, it seems another DC film project is shaping up, as Challengers director Luca Guadagnino is reportedly developing a Sgt. Rock film alongside actor Daniel Craig on the back of their collaboration on the film Queer, opening in US theaters on November 27 and UK cinemas on December 13.

As reported by Deadline, Guadagnino and Craig are still in talks with Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran about how or if Sgt. Rock may come to the screen. But it seems that the film could be Guadagnino's next project, taking precedence over his recently announced remake of American Psycho.

Sgt. Franklin Rock is a long running DC soldier character who dates back to 1959's Our Army At War #83 by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert after an earlier prototype of the character known simply as "The Rock" previously appeared a few months earlier in January 1959's GI Combat #68. Much like Marvel's Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, Sgt. Rock is the leader of a group known as Easy Company made up of archetypal soldiers. Sgt. Rock later led his own title from the '70s through the late '80s, and has continued to appear regularly since.

Though Sgt. Rock and Easy Company were originally fairly straightforward soldiers, they've been incorporated into the larger DC Universe in the decades since their introduction. Sgt. Rock himself even appeared in an episode of the animated series Batman: The Brave and the Bold where he was associated with none other than GI Robot, a member of the Creature Commandos in the animated series that will kick off the new cinematic DC Universe.
